SIU soccer defeats Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Freshman forward Madison Meiring's goal in the 85th minute Sunday gave the SIU women's soccer team a win in its first exhibition game in program history.

Meiring's goal, off an assist from Kailyn Stone, lifted the Salukis past Tennessee Tech 2-1 on the road. SIU led 1-0 off freshman midfielder Kaitlin Du Charme's goal in the 67th minute. The Golden Eagles of the Ohio Valley Conference tied it up off a penalty kick by Nora Vicsek in the 83rd minute.

Freshmen goalkeepers Dariana Mihalache and Nicole Raventos combined for nine saves in the win. Tennessee Tech had 18 shots, while the Salukis scored two goals on only five shots.

SIU is back in action Tuesday night at Illinois-Chicago. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Salukis host Southeast Missouri State Saturday night at 7 in their only home exhibition match. They officially open the first season in program history at home against Division II Illinois-Springfield Aug. 23. Kickoff at the Hartzog Track and Field Complex is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
