Matthis Besard, who helped SIU's men's golf win the Fuzzy Zoeller Intercollegiate last week, was named the Missouri Valley Conference men's golfer of the week on Tuesday.

CARBONDALE — SIU freshman Matthis Besard was named the Missouri Valley Conference golfer of the week, the league office announced on Wednesday.

At the Fuzzy Zoeller Intercollegiate, hosted by Indiana, Besard led wire-to-wire after shooting a first-round 66 (-6).

In his first collegiate competition, the Belgium native led the field in birdies and par-4 scoring, but it was a par that earned him the win. In the final round, after hitting a ball in the water and taking a drop on the eighth hole, Besard holed out from 70 yards away and ended up winning the tournament by one stroke over teammates Luke Gannon and Frankie Thomas. Besard's round of 66-70-71 (207, -9) ranks as the fourth-best 54-hole score in school history.

As a team, SIU won the tournament with a school-record three-round total of 836 (-28) and beat host Indiana by 10 strokes.
