CARBONDALE - It's a bit longer road trip than originally intended, but SIU's football team officially found its Football Bowl Subdivision opponent for the 2012 season Tuesday.
The Salukis and Miami of Ohio announced a Sept. 8 contest at Yager Stadium (24,286) in Oxford, Ohio, at a time to be announced later. Single-game tickets are expected to go on sale in August.
The 350-mile trek to Oxford is a bit longer than the 218 miles SIU expected to go to play Missouri, but will carry the same payout. Missouri originally signed a contract to pay the Salukis $325,000 to play this year, but after the Tigers joined the Southeastern Conference, the league schedule effectively eliminated that game.
It also knocked out Miami's game Sept. 22 against Missouri, which will be filled by a Mid-American Conference East Division game, according to RedHawks Athletic Director Brad Bates.
Miami agreed to pay SIU $125,000, Athletic Director Mario Moccia said, while the Tigers will pay the other $200,000. Missouri opens SEC play against Georgia Sept. 8 and will play at South Carolina Sept. 22.
SIU will now open the season Thursday, Aug. 30, at Eastern Illinois and then go to Miami. The RedHawks open at Ohio State Sept. 1 before opening their home schedule against the Salukis in what will be the first meeting between the two programs.
