CARBONDALE — Right after SIU's Friday afternoon baseball game against Morehead State, fans can enjoy some of the best fried fish in the area at the Carbondale Civic Center for a good cause.

The Salukis and Eagles open a three-game weekend series at 1 p.m. at Jones Stadium. The 23rd annual Saluki Baseball fish fry and memorabilia auction runs from 5-8 p.m. in the Carbondale Civic Center. The auction will begin at 7 p.m., and all proceeds benefit the Saluki Baseball program. It is one of their biggest fundraisers of the season.

Dinner includes all-you-can-eat fish, potato salad, coleslaw, bread, soft drinks, and delicious homemade desserts, all for only $10 for adults and $5 for children. Carry outs will also be available.

Featured items for auction include baseballs signed by more than 20 Hall of Famers and tickets to the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Blues. Golf packages at Dalhousie Golf Club, TBC Southwind, Victoria National Golf Club, and more are also available.

One of the featured items is a signed basketball from SIU's cherished 1967 NIT championship squad. Walt Frazier, one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players, Dick Garrett and Willie Griffin helped the Salukis go 24-2 and capture its only national title in men's basketball. Frazier, who won two NBA championships with the New York Knicks, has one of three retired jerseys inside the SIU Arena. His No. 52 hangs with Charlie "Chico" Vaughn and former women's standout Sue Faber's jerseys in the rafters.

Last year, memorabilia items included an autographed photo of Red Schoendienst, a bat autographed by Madison Bumgarner, a Kevin Garnett autographed jersey, an Albert Pujols autographed cap and a Jason Frasor autographed jersey. Other items included tickets for a Cardinals vs. White Sox game, tickets to a Cardinals vs. Cubs game, tickets to a Cardinals vs. Pirates game, tickets to a Cardinals vs. Rockies game, tickets to a Cubs vs. Twins game, a foursome at Gateway national, a foursome at Dalhousie Golf Club, a two-person duck hunt, a bench made of bleachers from the SIU Arena, and several pies from Mary Lou’s.
