SIU forward Abby Brockmeyer (25) drives on SIU-E forward Gwen Adams (44) this past season.

ST. LOUIS — SIU freshman forward Abby Brockmeyer was named the Missouri Valley Conference player and newcomer of the week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Brockmeyer became just the fifth player in conference history to earn both honors in the same week and the first to do so in program history. The 6-foot-1 Raymond native averaged 21.5 points, 11 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.0 steals to help guide the Salukis to a pair of MVC road victories. Brockmeyer set the school record for points by a freshman in a Valley game in SIU's 64-52 win over Evansville on Friday with 27.

All told, Brockmeyer set or tied nine career-bests in SIU's conference opening win, including points, rebounds (14), offensive rebounds (6) and steals (3). She notched the third double-double of her career.

Brockmeyer followed the Evansville win with a game-high 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and a career-high four blocks in a 64-45 win at Indiana State on Sunday. Her 43 combined points are the most of any Valley player through two conference games this season, and are the most by a freshman to start Valley play in program history.

Brockmeyer is the first freshman to earn both honors since Jan. 19, 2009, when Casey Garrison of Missouri State swept both awards. Brockmeyer joins Illinois State's Kristi Cirone (Dec. 19, 2005), Creighton's Kelsey Woodard (Feb. 4, 2008), Garrison (Jan. 19, 2009) and Evansville's Hannah Noe (Nov. 13, 2017) as the only players to earn both awards since the conference began giving out the newcomer of the week award prior to the 2003-04 season.

SIU (7-6, 2-0 MVC) will host two teams picked ahead of the Salukis in the league preseason poll in Northern Iowa (6-7, 2-0) on Friday night and Drake (7-7, 2-0) on Sunday. UNI and SIU tip-off at 6 p.m., while the defending league champion Bulldogs come to Carbondale for a 2 p.m. matchup. Both games are scheduled to air on ESPN3 and on WVZA 105.1 FM.
