Saluki second baseman Maddy Vermejan hauls in a throw for a put out during SIU's doubleheader against the Loyola Ramblers at Charlotte West Stadium on Saturday, in Carbondale.

CARBONDALE — The third and final game of SIU's softball series at Valparaiso was canceled Saturday because of rain.

The Salukis and Crusaders were slated to break their 1-1 series tie at 11 a.m. SIU now looks toward Tuesday's 4 p.m. game at sister school SIU-Edwardsville.

SIU lost Game 1 of a Friday doubleheader 7-6 and won the nightcap 9-6 to move to 19-12 overall and 4-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Valparaiso fell to 15-14, 3-5.

The two teams combined for 28 runs, six home runs and 37 hits in the doubleheader.

In the first game, Southern and Valparaiso traded the lead four times before the Crusaders won 7-6. In the second game, the Salukis scored nine runs in the final three innings to top Valparaiso 9-6.

"It was an interesting day. Both clubs hit the ball really, really well. We lost a tough one in Game 1, but our offense was tremendous all day today," coach Kerri Blaylock said. "In the second game, we had really good pitching. What a way to get nine runs in three innings and really gut one out. That's a thing in conference that you have to do sometimes. I was really proud of the kids for the way we finished."
