No. 10 - Landon ends remarkable track and field career

SIU's Kyle Landon qualified for his third NCAA outdoor high jump Saturday. Landon, a three-time academic All-American and five-time NCAA All-American, ended his remarkable career in 2017.

Saluki high jumper Kyle Landon secured his spot in the NCAA high jump finals at the national meet in Eugene, Oregon. The Chester native qualified in West Region action Saturday.

The top-12 finishers in their events at the NCAA East and West Preliminaries advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 7-10.

Landon earned his third trip to the NCAA outdoor championships. After passing on his opening two bars, Landon proceeded to clear the next three heights on first attempts. He was one of only three athletes to record zero misses, and was one of just six to clear 7-1.75, which locked up his spot in Eugene.

Several Salukis fell short of qualifying for the national meet. The Saluki women's 4x100 relay team, which won Southern's first Missouri Valley Conference title in the event since 1989, finished 16th Saturday with a time of 44.65. Kyle Kling finished 43rd in discus with a mark of 160-0, while Ricky Hurley competed in the discus but was not able to record a legal mark at his first regional meet.

Overall, SIU will be represented by three student athletes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Freya Block will throw the hammer, while Warren Hazel will run the 400 meters and Landon will compete in the high jump.
