CARTERVILLE — Crab Orchard Golf Club proprietor Steve Heckel is hoping to raise thousands of dollars during the July 1 Folds of Honor Charity Classic.
The Folds of Honor Foundation was founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, a golf course owner and PGA professional. He is a former F-16 pilot who served three combat tours in Iraq. Heckel said the foundation has raised $4 million since its inception. Folds of Honor gives scholarships to spouses and children of veterans killed or injured in military service.
Proceeds from the tournament will be split between Folds of Honor (75 percent) and the Gateway PGA Foundation.
“Two people have already signed up and gave $1,000 each,” Heckel said. “This is something that people feel is worthwhile. We hope to raise a significant amount of money for the two charities.
“I hope it’s in the tens of thousands of dollars.”
The event is being underwritten by Jim Weihl of RSP Heating and Cooling of Carterville. Weihl is paying for golf, carts and refreshments at the event. Participants are asked to make a monetary donation of at least $35 to play. Anyone donating $100 or more will get their names on a board that will be displayed permanently in the clubhouse.
Sixty two-person teams are being sought. The format will be a nine-hole scramble and a nine-hole shamble.
“We’ll fill the tournament in a week or 10 days,” Heckel said. “I haven’t talked to anyone who doesn’t want to support this tournament.”
All participants will be eligible for attendance prizes, including a tournament shirt.
“The shirt alone is a $60 golf shirt if you had to go out and buy it,” Heckel said.
In addition to players, Heckel and his committee are seeking tee, green and cart sponsors. The committee is seeking a minimum $100 sponsorship donation.
“We’re going to have a good time,” Heckel said. “It’s open to everybody. This is not about going out there and expecting to win a golf tournament. This is about something that is very dear to us.”
To register for the event, or to make a donation, make checks payable to Crab Orchard Golf Club/Folds of Honor, P.O. Box 398, Carterville IL 62918.
