DU QUOIN — Braden Miller pitched a complete game for Murphysboro in an 8-1 victory over Carmi-White County on Saturday in the championship game of the Class 2A Du Quoin Sectional.
The Red Devils’ offense jumpstarted in the bottom of the third inning, when Noah Baird reached on an error and Justin Pulcher and Marshall Grammer were both walked, which loaded the bases.
Then, senior catcher Matt Burke hit a double that brought home all three baserunners, and two batters later, Brandon Caldwell hit an RBI single to give Murphysboro a 5-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, Travis Black doubled home a run to give Carmi-White County their only run of the game.
Marshall Grammer and Justin Pulcher batted in two of the three runs Murphysboro scored in the bottom of the fourth inning.
“Our defense was very solid and we had some timely hitting,” said Murphysboro coach Andy Winters.
Miller gave up three hits and only allowed one run.
“Our pitching has been our biggest success story in the post-season, we’ve got Brandon Graeff who’s our number two, and we have Braden Miller, who started today, those guys have thrown all of our post season innings, they’ve done a tremendous job I couldn’t be prouder of what those two have done for us,” said Winters.
This is the first time Murphysboro has won a sectional championship since 1966. The Red Devils will play Teutopolis in the super sectional game Monday, at GCS Park in Sauget, Illinois.
