Massac County's Brock Burnham had an impressive showing during Friday's opening round of the Class 2A Boys Golf state final at Weibring Golf Club in Normal.
Burnham, a senior, shot a 75 for a tie for eighth place, but just two shots back of first. Centralia junior Caleb Urshan closed at 77, tied for 16th.
Benton's team stood in fourth place at day's end, with an overall score of 319, 12 shots back of first. Derek Oxford led the way for the Rangers, as the senior shot 77, tied for 22nd among individuals. Others scoring for Benton were Austin Wills (senior, 80), Gehrig Wynn (Jr., 81) and Jordan Richey (Sr., 81).
In the Class 1A tournament at Prairie Vista Golf Course in nearby Bloomington, Hamilton County stands in 11th place, 28 shots back, but just two shots out of the top ten, behind a ninth-place tie of Mercer County and Bismarck-Henning.
The Foxes were led by senior Nate Neal, with an 82. Other scores were: Kyle Van Abbema (Jr., 83) Austyn Downen (So., 88) and Cameron Gray (Jr., 95).
Chester's Baylee Mogdin was tied for 20th, with an 80.
In the Class 1A Girls final at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur, Nashville was in second place with a 337, 11 shots behind the leaders from Charleston.
Senior Jill Guetersloh led the Hornettes with a 79, tied for 40th. Other scorers were a trio of juniors: Hope Rueter (82), Rachael Kell (84) and Jordan Stiegman (92).
Massac County was in fourth, with a 363, paced by sophomore Millie Lawson's 84. Also contributing were Mady Blair (So., 86), Emma Korte (Jr., 90), and Maddie Bowlin (Sr., 93).
Pinckneyville sophomore Megan Breslin was the top overall scorer representing Southern Illinois, two shots back of the lead with a 76.
Other individuals competing were: Josie Sykes (Jr., Carbondale, 84, t-25), Maddy Wenzel (Sr., Carmi, 84, t-25), Sarah Breslin (So., Pinckneyville, 88, t-50) and Rorrie House (Jr. West Frankfort, 92, t-64).
All IHSA state golf events are scheduled to wrap with final rounds on Saturday.
