EFFINGHAM — It was a great day for Southern Illinois girls prep golf teams Monday at the Class 1A Sectional at Effingham Country Club.

Only three schools advance to the state tournament, and all three were area teams.

Nashville won the sectional with a score of 340. The defending state champions, Massac County, took second place, and Eldorado finished third.

“We all played pretty well, but it wasn’t easy by any means,” said Nashville senior Shawn Rennegarbe. “We had high expectations of going to state, but you never know what could happen. It’s really nice that we can all go up together.”

Rennegarbe, who committed to play collegiately at the University of Arkansas, shot a 1-under par 71. She was followed by teammates Natalie Johnson (82), Madi May (85) and Jessica Weihe (102).

Massac County has won two state championships in the past four years and finished in the top three at state each time. The Lady Patriots shot a 345 as a team and were led by Paige Ellerbusch, who carded an 81.

“Today’s round was filled with highs and lows for us, but my girls never gave up,” said Massac County coach Kimberly Futrell. “It was a tough course with tough competition. We knew we wanted to be in Decatur this weekend.”

Ali Eickholz shot an 83 as the Lady Patriots second best performance. Addie Gray (88) and Brittany Reynolds (93) rounded out the top four for Massac County.

Taylor Goodley delivered a 1-over par 73, which was the second best score in the sectional. She led Eldorado to a third place finish with a team score of 355.

“Every part of my game feels good; it’s all working for me,” Taylor Goodley said. “It was fun. I told myself not to think about the pressure and just go out and play the course. It’s so great to have my whole team there. They are so supportive, and it’s so much better than going up as an individual.”

Ashton Goodley carded an 80 for Eldorado. Taylor Aldridge (99) and Sam Mings (103) wrapped up the top four for the Lady Eagles, who edged Mount Carmel by one stroke for the final spot at the state finals.

Sparta’s Kendra Kessler (81) and Carterville’s Adrian Brown (84) also advanced to the state tournament. Okawville’s Kara Schoeker (87) and Herrin’s Macey Mooneyham (89) moved on to Decatur as well.

The Class 1A state tournament begins at Red Tail Run Golf Course on Friday.
