Southern Illinois will be sending a strong field contingent to the Illinois High School Association’s track and field competition this weekend. Class 1A preliminaries are Thursday at Eastern Illinois University.
Class 2A prelims are Friday with the state finals Saturday.
Du Quoin junior Dasani Edward is the only local athlete that will take a top seed to Eastern Illinois University.
Edward, who finished second in the triple jump last year, goes to Charleston as the top seed in the long jump. He had a sectional best of 22-10, but has jumped over 23 feet this year. His sectional triple jump was 43-10, but he went over 44 feet at state last year.
Vienna’s Lane Ross is the sixth seed.
Staying in Class 1A, Pinckneyville’s Dalton Kitchen is seeded eighth in the shot put, but his 51-3 sectional throw is within two feet of the top seed. And, Fairfield’s Luke Dagg is lumped with a number of high jumpers at 6-3. The top Class A mark is 6-7.
In Class 2A, Mount Vernon’s Eli Badger is seeded fourth in the pole vault at 14-9. The senior has vaulted over 15 feet in the past.
Murphysboro’s Dezmond Clark’s sectional triple jump of 44-3.5 was the fifth best in the state. While Marion’s Josh Schmid is ranked sixth in the shot put. Schmid threw 52-5.5 in sectional action. The Marion junior also earned the seventh seed in the discus with a sectional throw of 154-11.

In the Class 2A high jump, both C.J. Johnson of West Frankfort and Carbondale’s Martiez Pinnick cleared 6-4. One jumper went 6-8 in sectional competition while three cleared 6-6.
In the running events, Du Quoin accounts for a couple of two seeds. The Indians’ 400-meter relay team is ranked behind Pana while senior hurdler Shamar Adams time of 15.13 was second in the 110 high hurdles.
Du Quoin’s 800-meter relay had the fifth best sectional time.
Finally, Adams and Pinckneyville’s Stetson Lappin are among the top nine seeds. Lappin ran 40.89 while Adams finished at 41.10.
Marion’s Stuart Adkinson ranks among the top seeds in both hurdle events. He ran a 14.83 in the 110 highs, the fifth best sectional time. And, his 40.38 is ninth in the 300 hurdles. The top nine finishes at state score.
Points are also possible in the 800 and 1,600 meters.
Centralia’s Matt Speidel are seeded 7-8 in the 800 meters. Speidel ran a 1:59.63 and Herrin’s Drew Ringel 1:59.90. In the 1,600, Centralia’s Brooks Harlan has the ninth seed and Ethan Cherry is 10th. And, Carbondale freshman Alex Partlow is ninth in the 3,200 meters.
The only other Class 2A seed is Murphysboro’s Logan Sullivan in the 400 meters. His 50.86 was the ninth best sectional time.
