The Southern Illinois Miners beat the Gateway Grizzlies 5-2 in just under three hours on Friday during a Frontier League baseball game at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget.
The first three innings of the match up were scoreless with Aaron Rozek pitching for the Miners and Mike Elwood for the Grizzlies.
However, the Miners swung their bats into action in the fourth inning with Harrison Bragg, Jake Willsey, and Max Dutto all three earning runs.
A home run for the Grizzlies by Audie Afenirin in the bottom of the fourth put them on the board, but the Miners claimed another run by Kyle Davis in the seventh, with Chance Shepard adding to the lead with one final run in the ninth.
The Grizzlies made one more effort to win when another run by Afenirin in the ninth brought the final score to 5-2.
The Miners will play game two against the Grizzlies tonight in Sauget with Austin Dubsky as the probable pitcher for the Miners and Taso Stathopoulos pitching for the Grizzlies.
