CARBONDALE —  SIU swimmers Chris Cole and Bryn Handley earned first team academic all-district honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America, the organization announced Thursday.

Cole is a two-time Mid-American Conference scholar-athlete and earned second team All-MAC honors in 2018. He qualified for the A-Final in the 400-yard individual medley, 500 free, and 1,650 free at the MAC championships. The junior has a perfect 4.0 GPA in journalism.

Handley was a five-time MVC swimmer of the week and earned the MVC's Elite 17 Award. In her career, Handley is a 12-time MVC swimmer of the week, six-time MVC champion and three-time MVC Elite 17 Award winner. Handley graduated summa cum laude this spring with a perfect 4.0 GPA in behavior analysis and therapy.

Both were selected in the at-large voting, which includes the sports of swimming, wrestling, golf, tennis, ice hockey, fencing, rifle, lacrosse and gymnastics. They were selected in District 5, which includes all Division I universities in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

First team academic all-district honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, with first and second team academic All-America honorees to be announced in June.
