CARBONDALE — SIU senior pitcher Chad Whitmer was named the Missouri Valley Conference pitcher of the week Monday after helping the Salukis to their third straight Friday night win.

Whitmer allowed one run in eight innings in SIU's 4-1 win over Dallas Baptist on Friday afternoon at Jones Stadium. Whitmer struck out eight and limited the Patriots to five hits. In his last three outings, he has a 1.48 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 24 innings.

Whitmer earned MVC pitcher of the week for the second time this year, becoming the first SIU pitcher to earn the honor multiple times in a season since P.J. Finigan earned it three times in 2005. Along with Whitmer's two honors, closer Ryan Netmeyer earned the award in March after collecting three saves without allowing a hit in a week.

SIU (23-22) hosts Illinois (18-23) Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Salukis are going for a three-game sweep of the Fighting Illini after winning two games at Illinois earlier this year. The game is scheduled to air on WVZA 105.1 FM and ESPN3.

Lefty Jamison Steege (1-1, 7.23 ERA) is scheduled to start for SIU against Illinois' Cole Bellair (3-2, 6.95 ERA).
